Blog Tour: Angel by Laura Lee

Literary Fiction
Date Published: September 2011

Since the loss of his lively, charming wife to cancer six years ago, minister Paul Tobit has been operating on autopilot, performing his church duties by rote. Everything changes the day he enters the church lobby and encounters a radiant, luminous being lit from behind, breathtakingly beautiful and glowing with life. An angel. For a moment Paul is so taken by his vision that he is tempted to fall on his knees and pray.

Even after he regains his focus and realizes that he has only seen a flesh-and-blood young man, Paul cannot shake his sense of awe and wonder. He feels an instant and overwhelming attraction to the young man, which puzzles him even as it fills his thoughts and fires his feelings. Paul has no doubt that God has spoken to him through the vision and he must figure out what God is asking him to do.

Thus begins a journey that will inspire Paul's ministry, but will put him at odds with the church he loves as he is forced to examine his deeply held beliefs about himself, his community and the nature of love.

My Review:
What an unexpected treat. There are some books that you have no idea what you are getting yourself into when you start reading them and this was completely one of them. Homosexuality and Christianity is a huge theme and what a perfect time for me to read this book considering all of the Equal Rights activism that is going around social media right now, which I 100% support by the way!

Apart from the main theme of this story, Laura Lee manages to get to her readers and having them reflect on their own life and the bigger picture. That is an amazing accomplishment when you can turn something that deals with such a huge issue around and connect even more with the reader than before.

In a category of its own due to the fact that it deals with M/M without being Erotica, I genuinely enjoyed every part of this story!

Upper East Side designer Lex Easton will be damned if she'll let an Italian stud muffin knock her down. So what if she named her favorite vibrator after him. With Fashion Week approaching, she'll do whatever it takes to secure the fabrics she needs to become the next Diane von Furstenburg-- even sleep with her rival. If you've enjoyed TV shows like Girls (HBO), Dirty Sexy Money (ABC), and The Bold & the Beautiful (CBS) then you'll love this series. Avery's characters are over the top. They have raunchy sex, speak their minds and the plots are twisted. (In a good way!) Manhattanites celebrate lust, ambition, and true devotion.

PROMO: Offsides by Sawyer Bennett

New Adult - Contemporary Romance
Date Published: February 21, 2013

“I'm not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone...something...to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost...a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved...”

Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

Forced to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her own success.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days...

Excerpt

Ryan opens my car door for me and takes my hand. We walk together to my apartment
door and I'm looking for my keys in my purse, all of a sudden nervous. A minute ago I was ready
to jump in bed with Ryan, but now, in the harsh fluorescent light of the hallway outside of my
apartment, I'm faced with the uncertainty of a relationship with a man who is so different than
me.
Putting his finger under my chin, Ryan tilts my head up to his and says, "Don't."
He knows I'm doubting this and that tells me a lot about how perceptive he is. Before I can
respond he pulls me to him and kisses me...hard. And every thought flies out of my head.
My hands snake up his chest and wrap around his neck before slipping into his hair. It's
as soft and silky as I had been trying hard not imagine. Our tongues are swirling...stabbing...and
then my teeth grab his bottom lip and bite. He answers me with a guttural sound that vibrates
from his mouth into mine.
Without breaking our hold on each other, Ryan pushes me one step backward until my
back is pressed into my door. His hands graze down my sides until they reach my hips. His
fingers dig in, pulling me tight against him and I can feel his hardness. I am drowning in Ryan,
or maybe he's downing in me by the sounds of his ragged breathing, I do not know. I just know I
have never been kissed like this before and something warm is unfurling in my chest in response
to this passion.
Ryan finally pulls away slightly, breathing hard against my mouth. "Jesus, Danny."
I don't think Jesus has anything to do with the explosion that just happened between us but
if He did, I'm heading to church this weekend to thank Him.

Blog Tour: Taming Tyler by Rebecca Rembish

YA Contemporary Romance
Sequel to Texting Tyler
Date Published: 2/25/13

In Rebecca Rembish's premier novel, 'texting tyler', Chris lives in the shadow of his older brother, struggling to be the popular one... the good looking one... the one all the girls adored.

No doubt about it, TylerClarke is hot.
Tyler Clarke has a reputation.
Tyler Clarke has been with every girl in
school.
Tyler Clarke is also a virgin... or at least he was until his first date with Lori Matthews.

One thing Tyler could never seem to avoid was a label. Good or bad, no label had ever bothered him quite as much as the one he received from Lori. What was it about her that made him care so much? Why was she different from all the other girls he ever met?

While Tyler never made decisions on a future beyond high school, Lori is a planner. After graduation, she decides to spend her first year at home and attend the community college for two reasons. She needs more time to plan
her future and she needs to save money. Tyler and what came next were never part of her plan.

With an uncertain future, a pregnant girlfriend and not many people to turn to, Tyler struggles with one of the toughest years of his life.

Lori's careful plans are turned upside down. The fear of raising a baby inthe same difficult circumstances she grew up with and a relationship that scares her to death, Lori must make the most heart wrenching decision of her life.

My Review:

This book definitely a step up from the first in the series. Deeply emotional and heartbreaking but altogether beautiful.

The growth that Tyler shows is unbelievable and honestly I was pleasantly surprised.

This one is definitely full of drama and will leave you desperate for the next one.

Blog Tour: Shadow of the Wolf by S.M. Pace

Young Adult Fantasy
Date Published: 11/28/12

Toby has always felt like an outcast in his village, but he thought winning a game at the Summer Fair was the answer to making friends. The local boys disagreed and literally threw Toby to the wolves. Stranded in enemy territory with a broken leg, he’s offered two options by the resident werewolves; death or permanent exile from his race.

Although Toby longs to return to his family, he chooses to live. But the werewolf children torment him just like the boys and girls back home. When he fights back and discovers he can wield magic, a crime in his old kingdom, he realizes he’s safer with the werewolves than he ever was amongst his own kind. He even finds happiness and acceptance, until his real sister contacts him with her own forbidden magic.

Fearing for her safety, Toby must decide where his loyalties lie; with the family he grew up with or the werewolves who took him in when his own people discarded him?

My Review:
So I occasionally read a bit out of my comfort zone and this was one of those books for me. I really wasn't sure what to expect and I am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised.

While this seems bit younger than the typical Young Adult books I read, it still had great depth to the characters and plot. The lead character particularly was very wonderful to read about and I found myself engrossed in his world. It felt very much like rooting for the underdog and hoping like heck he pulled it out.

I think this is definitely something fresh and has a deeper theme behind it. I really enjoyed the action and the mystery all rolled into one.

Book Review: Broken by Christa Cervone

According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition of the word Broken is violently separated into parts. SHATTERED.

Yup, that pretty much sums me up. How do I handle things? I find my answers at the bottom of a bottle of Tequila and sleep with random men.

How did I get this way? Well, four years ago I made a decision that cost me the love of my life. I can't undo what I did to drive Garrett out of my life. I haven't seen or heard from him in four long years. But he still haunts me in my dreams or should I call them nightmares at this point? No matter how much booze I drink and how many men I sleep with, nothing fills the void. I feel like I am existing but I’m not really living.

I’m trying to get my life back on track. Well that was until. . . . Garrett walked back into my life. His reappearance threw me into another tailspin.
How do I put the pieces of our broken hearts back together? All before he walks out of my life again... this time for good. Or am I simply destined to just be Broken?

My Review:

This story was a bit backwards, but I actually found that nice. Most of the time, characters meet, they fall in love, then something happens to break them up, and finally they reunite for their HEA. In this one the major breakup has already happened and get to witness their journey to HEA. It is a little frustrating at the beginning not knowing the details of what happened and not knowing how to feel about Leila. She is not very likable at all in the beginning which make it difficult as a reader to get invested in a book. But alas, she does have redeeming qualities that begin to shine through and for me it is all about the redemption. I love a truly screwed up personality that works to change themselves for the better.

And Garrett, oh my, I think I was in love with him from the start. I truly worthy male lead with such a heart wrenching story. Definitely worth the read!

Book Review: Wait For You by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Some things are worth waiting for…

Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.

Some things are worth experiencing…

Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.

Some things should never be kept quiet…

But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?

And some things are worth fighting for…

My Review:
I'm not a fan of the love at first sight or three chapters in relationship books, so this one was definitely a welcome change because the characters actually fall in love over time, realistically. Avery had a difficult past and is not ready for a relationship of any kind and no matter how much Cam tries and asks, she always says no. Of course she has not idea how serious he really is. After a while, she plays it off like a running joke between them. No matter how much those around her and Cam himself for that matter try to open her eyes to the realness of his feelings, she shuts him out romantically. One thing that is great is their friendship. They really do build a strong foundation as friends and even when they are just friends, it is amazing to see how their chemistry shines through.

Jennifer L. Armentrout has really shown an amazing talent for writing in this one. The witty banter both in person and via text is perfect. There are so many one-liners and conversations that stick out. Their flirting even when it was innocent, was hott.

And Cam, how patient he was even when it was the last thing he wanted to be. He was beyond swoon worthy! Wonderful, wonderful book!

ARC Book Review - Rush Me by Allison Parr

When post-grad Rachael Hamilton accidentally gate-crashes a pro-athlete party, she ends up face-to-face with Ryan Carter, the NFL's most beloved quarterback.
While most girls would be thrilled to meet the attractive young millionaire, Rachael would rather spend time with books than at sporting events, and she has more important things to worry about than romance. Like her parents pressuring her to leave her unpaid publishing internship for law school.
But when Ryan's rookie teammate attaches himself to Rachael, she ends up cohosting Friday-night dinners for half a dozen football players.
Over pancake brunches, charity galas and Alexander the Great, Rachael realizes all the judgments she'd made about Ryan are wrong. But how can a Midwestern Irish-Catholic jock with commitment problems and an artsy, gun-shy Jewish New Englander ever forge a partnership? Rachael must let down her barriers if she wants real love—even if that opens her up to pain that could send her back into her emotional shell forever.
89,000 words
My Review:
I'm not going to lie, Rachel got on my nerves a bit in the beginning. She was really uptight and judgemental. I understand how some of it was warranted, but even when people would prove her wrong, she continued to have the same thoughts about them. Ryan was a difficult lead to get behind for a while too. He is very in your face and was upstaged by the other guys in the beginning. I really did not understand how these two were going to make it work and let me tell you there are definitely plenty of ups and downs in their friendship/relationship.
That being said, there was something endeering about everything they overcame and the differences in their lives but the amount they actually had in common. I really enjoyed most of their banter.
The secondary characters in this story stole my heart! I absolutely adored Abe! And I loved the fact that Malcom and Brie's drama bled through to this novel as well. I really hope we get to see more from these characters in the future.

Book Review: Stealing Home by Jennifer Seasons

Contemporary Romance - Sports

Love may be just a game, but the baseball players in Jennifer Seasons' sexy Diamonds and Dugouts series—they're playing for keeps!
Mark Cutter has it all: a lucrative baseball career, fast cars, and faster women—and all thanks to his priceless good luck charm. At least, that's what he thinks before Lorelei Littleton shows up. Next thing he knows, he's waking up alone, the sexy brunette has vanished, and his good luck charm is gone. More than a little curious about the wicked-hot cat burglar and determined to get his property back, Mark's going to track down the thief and make her pay—big time.
Maybe Lorelei feels a tiny bit guilty for stealing Mark's good luck charm, but when it's worth $100,000 and the money could save her niece's life? She's not losing sleep over it … but him? Lorelei can't get the ballplayer with the bad attitude out of her head. And now he's come after her with more than just revenge in his eyes. Lorelei has a choice: turn over the charm and lose the money, or keep it and risk losing everything … including her heart.

My Review:
What a unique way for the two main characters to meet. I really did think that this author showed a lot of imagination in writing this story. I loved the fact that Lorelei had a darn good reason for doing what she did, even if it was a not so great decision on her part. I understood both her motivation and justification for doing what she did.

She was so not expecting the Mark Cutter she met and he was definitely not expecting to be so drawn to her after what she pulled over on him. I liked that the author drew out the story enough for us to really get to know the secondary characters as well. Mark's sister was one of my favorites, but I could not stand her use of the word Y'all's.... I live in Texas and use the word Y'all often. I have never heard anyone add n "s" to it and especially not when talking to only one person. That really irritated me. Y'all is already plural!

Interview: J.S. Taylor

Today I have an Interview with J.S. Taylor, Author of Close Up and Personal

Is There a Message in Your Novel That You Want Readers to Grasp?

There are a few messages I think. I’ve based it a little on a fairy story – so there are subtle
(and not so subtle!) references to Beauty and the Beast. This is the story of redemptive
love. That no matter how bad someone’s past behavior is, love can save them and make
them do good things. The movie which Isabella is scheduled to act in is also based on
Beauty and the Beast.

There’s also a little bit about judgment and anger in there. That someone’s outside
behavior doesn’t always show what they’re really feeling. And emotions like pain and
sadness can twist into other things on the surface.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I have to say, I love writing so much, that I would do it all day every day if I could. I
suppose it’s a bit challenging to map out the characters before – because I so desperate
to start writing! But I know I have to fully map everyone out if they’re going to interact
together well and tell a good (hopefully!) story.

If You had the chance to cast your main character from Hollywood today, who
would you pick and why?

Oooo I love this question! I have thought about this. Can I have more than one? In terms
of appearance, I see Isabella as looking quite a lot like Megan Fox, but I think this actress
might be a bit too worldly wise to play her.

I love the idea of Jennifer Lawrence playing her (she’d have to dye her hair, but her eyes
are right!), and of course Kristen Stewart.

When did you begin writing?

As soon as I could hold a pen I wrote stories. I started writing professionally for national
newspapers aged 19. I wrote my first (terrible!) novel, aged 20. I’m 33 now.

How long did it take to complete your first book?

My very first book took about six months. Books after take around six months to get the
words down, and up to another year to perfect. The Spotlight series gets written a little
quicker than this, since it’s such a light format.

Did you have an author who inspired you to become a writer?

Sooo many authors, who I know I will never be as good as. Jackie Collins is probably the
main one. If I could be as quarter as good as Jackie, I would be happy.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

I like it all (sorry!), but I guess I prefer getting started to finishing up. I like taking time
with the real fantasy scenes, where the characters visit fancy hotels and restaurants. I’ve
been to a lot of these places as a journalist in London, so it’s fun to describe them as I see
them.

Describe your latest book in one Tweet!

Actress and director – the stage is set for passion

Can you share a little bit about your current work or what is in the future for your
writing?

Sure! I’m currently finishing the Berkeley Method, and after that I’ll get getting started
on the sequel to that – The Directors Cut, or The Final Act – this will depend on whether
Issy and James need three books to tell their story rather than four. So we’ll have to wait
and see how quickly they can move!

Book Review: Up Close and Personal by J.S. Taylor

Contemporary Erotica

Actress and director. The stage is set for passion...

Drama-school graduate Isabella Green wants to be a script-writer. But when she meets famous director James Berkeley, she’s tempted into the glamorous world of acting.

Behind the camera, the mysterious Berkeley commands discipline at all times. But Isabella soon discovers his dominant male tendencies also extend into the dressing room.

Suddenly Isabella is discovering a side of herself she never knew existed. But she is also learning more about the alluring James Berkeley. Is his desperate past something she can help heal? Or will the flames of passion consume them both when the cameras start rolling?

Lights, camera, action...

My Review:

So What can I say? I'm a sucker for the innocent girl who gets tangled up with a much more experienced man who's emotions are hard to read and has a weakness for her for a reason even he doesn't understand. Yes, just like the author says, readers of 50 shades and the like will definitely love this story.

The major difference? J.S. Taylor manages to keep with the theme while adding in her own unique story line. I love the fact that Isabella is an aspiring screen-writer who is on an audition she does not expect to get the part for. This is just something to appease a friend. But when she meets Berkeley who is just supposed to be a financial part of the movie and not actually handle the casting. The chemistry between the two is palpable from the beginning.

I personally loved the fact that Berkeley was married and Isabella had to wade through her emotions about that and see if he was telling her the truth about the marriage being that of a publicity only one.

Berkeley is very dominant and knows what he wants and even knows what Isabella wants when she's not sure herself. This story is left unfinished like others of its kind. We know Berkeley has secrets, but have really had no light shed on them as of yet. I can not wait to see what the next one has to bring.

I will have an interview with the Author later today!

After the Ending
Lindsey Fairleigh and Lindsey Pogue
Sci-Fi / Dystopian
Date Published: 2/22/13

The Virus spread. Billions died. The Ending began. We may have survived the apocalypse, but the Virus changed us.

When people started getting sick, “they” thought it was just the flu. My roommate, my boyfriend, my family…they’re all gone now. I got sick too. I should have died with them—with the rest of the world—but I didn’t. I thought witnessing the human population almost disappear off the face of the earth was the craziest thing I’d ever experience. I was so wrong. My name is Dani O’Connor, I’m twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.

The Virus changed everything. The world I knew is gone, and life is backwards. We’ve all had to start over. I’ve been stripped of my home, my dreams…all that is me. I’m someone else now— broken and changed. Other survivors’ memories and emotions haunt me. They invade my mind until I can no longer separate them from my own. I won’t let them consume me. I can’t. My name is Zoe Cartwright, I’m twenty-six-years-old, and I survived The Ending.

We’ve been inseparable for most of our lives, and now our friendship is all we have left. The aftermath of the Virus has stranded us on opposite sides of the United States. Trusting strangers, making sacrifices, killing—we’ll do anything to reach one another. Fear and pain may be unavoidable, but we’re strong…we’re survivors. But to continue surviving in this unfamiliar world plagued by Crazies and strange new abilities, we have to adapt. We have to evolve.

EXCERPT

Looking around apprehensively, I made my way toward the convenience store in hopes of finding a bathroom. The vacant world around me was eerily silent. All I could hear was the creaking of a giant wooden billboard being assaulted by the wind. How long has it been since anyone was here? Through the dark windows I saw a bathroom sign that looked promising, but I couldn’t bring myself to enter. I wonder if it’s safe…

As I stood outside of the store, I noticed a newspaper box still filled with papers. I leaned closer. The headline read, BILLIONS DEAD, and the paper was dated December 9, right before everything had started to shut down. I inserted a quarter and snatched out a paper. Scanning its contents, my mouth grew dry and my body stiffened.

…the H1N1/12 pandemic…
…looting and riotous outbreaks everywhere…
…end of civilization as we know it…
…survivors losing their minds…
…governments can’t control…
…the Apocalypse…

The newspaper slipped from between my fingers. Frozen in place, I was suffocated by the reality of our situation.
This isn’t going away.
The world ended. Thinking of the strange feelings I’d been experiencing, I once again questioned my own sanity. My thoughts were too loud to silence. My heart thudded, and I couldn’t swallow the lump in my throat. Looking out into the abandoned world around me, I realized how alone we really were. I bent down to reclaim the paper and turned on my heels to head back toward the truck, completely awestruck as the words I’d read replayed in my mind. Each was a reminder that the only world I’d ever known had ended.

Author Bio:

Lindsey Fairleigh lives her life with one foot in a book—as long as that book transports her to a magical world or bends the rules of science. Her novels, from post-apocalyptic to time travel and historical fantasy, always offer up a hearty dose of unreality, along with plenty of adventure and romance. When she’s not working on her next novel, Lindsey spends her time reading and trying out new recipes in the kitchen. She lives in the Napa Valley with her loving husband and confused cats.

Lindsey Pogue has always been a little creative. As a child she established a bug hospital on her elementary school soccer field, compiled books of collages as a teenager, and as an adult, expresses herself through writing. Her novels are inspired by her observations of the world around her—whether she’s traveling, people watching, or hiking. When not plotting her next storyline or dreaming up new, brooding characters, Lindsey’s wrapped in blankets watching her favorite action flicks or going on road trips with her own leading man.
