The Wild Ones is about 7 young wild horses left on their own. How they survive and are eventually gentled by the men of the Circle bar X ranch. The horses talk amongst themselves but not to the humans in the story. It is told from one of the mare’s point of view. This is her first novel written from a picture of two black/grey horses on a calendar and what her father taught her.

Review

For me Young Adult novels are all about feeling like you understand the characters, and Gladys Swedak really takes it a step further by having us get in the minds of wildlife.

This novel was unlike most Coming of Age novels I've read recently and I loved the uniqueness of it. I loved the addition of the horses and how they interacted and learned things that can actually coincide with things young readers will go through.

Wonderfully concise writing style. Easy to follow and characters that are easy to love!
